About Us

Objectives: Establishing an organization which will:

  1. Provide benefit in the form of shelter, food, clothing and education to a limited number of "street kids" in the Philippines and Cambodia
  2. Serve as a model for like minded individuals and organizations, domestic and international.
  3. Assist existing organizations in researching the scope and nature of the problem
  4. Formulate alternative policy suggestions for reducing the problem working in conjunction with domestic and international educational and research institutions

Immediate goal:
Identify and undertake projects for summer of 2002. We are exploring the possibility of helping to set up programs in the Baguio, Philippines and also in Laos.

Long Term Goals:
To establish financially sustainable shelters for orphans and disadvantaged youth in the developing countries of Southeast Asia.

Means of accomplishing goals:

  1. During the one month programs we will be leasing accommodations. . Eventually we will enter a long term lease of a large dwelling. We will establish one, two, or three rooms within the shelter for paying guests and one or two rooms for volunteers and staff.
  2. Will hire local people to help with providing services for the children.
  3. Unpaid volunteers from abroad will also be used. It is hoped that we will be able to draw on Cambodian and Philippine university faculty and graduate students to provide guidance and assistance.
  4. Street kids with adequate language skills will be offered positions as "tour guides" for these guests. 75% of the income earned by these youngsters will go into a trust fund for their higher education, the remainder will be given to them for spending money. Children with other aspirations will be taught marketable skills (computers, electronics, carpentry, mechanics, etc.) by volunteers. All children, if physically and mentally able, will attend public schools. The education they receive from us will be considered supplemental.

Raising funds to accomplish goals:
Individuals in the Kona area have volunteered to make Christmas decorations to sell beginning in November. Some will grow plants to sell to Kona residents. We also plan to have car washes. One of the officers of HIHF is in the process of writing a cookbook to sell. Another volunteer will play the guitar and sing songs for donations in front of a department store in Kona. Some of the people interested in HIHF are artists, and a few have indicated that they may wish to donate some of their art for sale with proceeds going to HIHF. One in particular, is internationally famous, commanding as much as $25,000 for his work.

We have begun selling Hindu good luck charms and silver boxes produced in Cambodia, as well as herbs, spices, and noni tea grown by volunteers.

We will consider growing organic vegetables at the shelter both for the food needs of the residents and surplus sales to hotels, logistics permitting.

Finally, without solicitation, a several people have already donated to this cause. We are a 501c3 company now! We have also informed local businesses and individuals about our effort and invite them to contribute.

As you can see, this is very much a "people to people" project, and that's exactly as we wish it to be.

The Hawaii International HOPE Foundation (HIHF) is comprised of a
